Snow, Sunrises, Sunsets, and a Tree

December has been an eventful time in Greeley with snowstorms fullfilling the desire of a white seasonal Christmas around the corner....Sunsets & Sunrises have given indications of Warm & Cold weather on the way....Red skies at night sailors delight, red mornings sailors take warnings! This has true to be true the past few weeks!

Three Words

Warm Air Advection:

Kabatic Winds (strong down sloping winds) from Georgetown into Idaho Springs, CO
It's a repeat! Pretty cool for a meteorologist....

Hats off to Dominating Low

It's good to actually see a beautiful structured strengthening low dominating the eastern half of the United States! The Comma is sweet! Not Coma...it ain't sleepin!
Here are archived material to start out December:

Interesting surface OBS

Notice the obs throughout specially the temps....now look at the warm pocket of moving parcels located on the downslope side of I-70....pretty cool given dewpoints r dead!

Still in the process of accepting this new look to my blogpage....will see...

By the way it's called WAA here is the 925 temps...

Battle of the Pressures!

What once look to be promising 132 hrs has fizzled out once again...The Pacific Low is making its way into CO but remaining in the four corners and moving southeast into TX leaving chances of snow on the front range into plains very hopeless...Thurs into Fri night could see the only chance of precip if convection happens....more wind with CAA which is blowcrap if you ask me? I guess that's why they call it Battle of the Pressures! Low- 0 wins High- don't ask

Southern Pacific Low

The low I've been monitoring sitting off the coast of California has prompted forecast models to look presumptuous in attempting its actual first four corner low setup bringing in chances of snow into Colorado for prolly the worst day. Thanksgiving on the 27th will bring joy to some eating turkey inside, but for those traveling will have something they haven't seen at all this year. The first actual real snow that actually sticks to the ground for more than 2-3 hours....

I'm excited to nowcast for today

Hope all those going down have a great time! Will be watching the skies for upslope snow instead of watching for supercells exploding.....all good though....peace out

Oklahoma where the wind bloweth....

Dann, Shep, & I ventured a long 25.5 hours of continuous motion! All seasons, all weather, all was experienced...amazing considering a 15% hatched tornado risk turned out not to be a factor considering one dynamic force was missing....mid-surface level winds was a guessing factor for both Dann & I...sunset, wind, cold rain, snow, leading edge of cold front, sunrise, cirrus, cumo field, warm, hot, humid, southerly winds, beautiful summer feeling, severe weather, hail chamber, tremendous outflow, warm rain, sunset, updraft motion, scuds, lightning, dryline, meso, wind, pouring rain, flooding, IC-CC lightning show, clear, rain, blasting CAA, stratoCU bands, sunrise.
Most of the chasing covered the terrain of Oklahoma!

Wakeeney

excitement leading to hatched area! enjoy....

First November Chase

As of 2:22AM I am sitting on Tower Road stealing the powerful world of internet! Looking at the models they seem opportune for a chase to enjoy in the Fall Season....Shep & I are rendevousing with Dan at DIA it should be a randomizing solid chase trip!

Ridge of Death! October brings Hope!

It was October 4th 2004 I witnessed from and in my dorm room in Greeley, Colorado my first spinning column of air from afar. You ask in my room...well my room was a disaster from just Skinner style mess...but also outside looking towards the mountains out popped a boundary colliding landspout. 9 to be exact were reported on this day along the front range...it was a fun landspout day....
Why am I mentioning this, well for all meteorologists and chasers the Ridge of Death has been stopping the progression of towers to nuclearize! But not only that GVTH's at this time aren't very popular due to the stable atmosphere. Our only hope lies in the fall season boundaries last minute....looking at the GFS models there shows that tweak of a disturbance making its way into CO around October 4-5th. Just a line of storms developing due to a disturbance colliding with a boundary will be what my eyes set for....till than will let models play out like legos build......

a Wikipedia moment....

Luke Howard (November 28, 1772March 21, 1864) was a British manufacturing chemist and an amateur meteorologist with broad interests in science [1]. His lasting contribution to science is a nomenclature system for clouds, which he proposed in an 1802 presentation to the Askesian Society.
Howard has been called "the father of meteorology" because of his comprehensive recordings of weather in the London area from 1801 to 1841 and his writings, which transformed the science of meteorology. [1] In his late twenties, he wrote the Essay on the Modification of Clouds, which was published in 1803.[2] He named the three principal categories of clouds - cumulus, stratus, and cirrus, as well as a series of intermediate and compound modifications, such as cirrostratus and stratocumulus, in order to accommodate the transitions occurring between the forms.

Path of IKE

Hurricane Ike all said and done....continuing prayers for strength and relief efforts by the emergency management teams in Galveston & Houston. There are crazy pics on yahoo if you look up IKE photos...The one with the fish stuck in the fence was funny in my opinion. It must have been a hell of a ride for that fish!

Decision

This is was not an easy decision, but with friends that actually do give meteorological and loving advice....I took this under serious advisement since the atmosphere of chasing a hurricane was not natural to me...There will be a time to chase a hurricane for sure in the future, but this particular one with nothing under my belt....it was not worth it....Thanx friends....My prayers go out to the safety of those in the path of this hurricane and to the emergency management teams for quick and safe efforts to get the people to safety....Till than keep watching the skies....

IKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by tomorrow...my permanent decision to chase Hurricane Ike will be decided on forecasted landfall. My idea is stay within the premise of Texas and Louisiana border or just Texas....anything east is not worth it....so far all is looking promising so....just a matter of the ridge breaking or not causing the Hurricane to dramatically change its course due directly north pounding Louisiana all of a sudden....this is a possible scenario....
excited to see the intensity of IKE tom. afternoon as it passes over the lovely warm 30-32 degree Celsius waters....
till than keep watchin the skies...peace out!

Bring The Storms SD/NE plains

Mission, SD to Valentine, NE...beautiful town by the way...would be my target tomorrow for severe weather even a possible quickie tornado upon initiation...have fun chasers up north....
Strong sfc winds help to convince the chances of a great storm to have tremendous inflow...as far as 500 mb is concerned a short wave helps to lead to the idea of enhanced propagation helping to churn up a supercell...flow aloft is the only concern to keep this tilting...enough forcing from multiple towering cumulus will help propagate this motion southeastward....that's my forecast and I'm stickin with it...
